The swift action taken by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) in relieving the officer of his duties after the incident at Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, is reassuring. The footage, which quickly gained traction online, shows the officer attempting to extort an expatriate by saying, “What do you have for us?”

In the video, the passenger, reportedly a tourist, tries to dodge the officer’s persistent demands, but the official remains unyielding. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the conduct of immigration officers at the airport.

Following the incident, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, responded with shock and disappointment. She called the video “disturbing” and highlighted that the officer’s actions did not align with the standards expected at Nigerian airports.

In a statement, Kuku said, “The behaviour seen in the video is completely unacceptable and does not represent the experience we aim to provide to our passengers.” She assured the public that the officer had been promptly removed from his position at the terminal.

Kuku also revealed that the officer is now undergoing disciplinary procedures within the NIS. She reaffirmed FAAN’s unwavering commitment to upholding professionalism and integrity among airport personnel, ensuring that such incidents are addressed swiftly to prevent reoccurrence.

Kuku encouraged them to report any similar behaviour they might encounter to protect passengers further. She pointed out that FAAN has provided phone numbers and QR codes throughout the terminals for easy reporting and support.

“Our top priorities are the safety and comfort of all passengers,” Kuku emphasised. “We are committed to taking every necessary step to ensure a pleasant travel experience for everyone using our facilities.”

The incident has reignited discussions on the need for enhanced supervision and training for airport officials, especially those in authoritative roles, to eliminate unethical practices in
